Volunteer Opportunities

Print E-mail
People who donate their time and talent to the agency come from all age groups and many walks of life.  Sometimes a part of the agency may be operating with only one or two staff members, and dozens of volunteers fill out the work roster.

More than 250 local residents are regular volunteers, coming in on scheduled days to make food pickups and stock shelves in the food pantry or sort and price clothing in the resale shop.  Others bring technical expertise or career experience to the office operation.  Another group of volunteers pitches in only at fundraiser times, running some events and bringing in donations from local residents and businesses.

Retirees are a special brand of volunteer at Together We Cope.  They are among the most reliable and experienced people working at the agency, bringing with them a lifetime of wisdom.  Asked why she was such a reliable regular in the food pantry, one woman summed up the sentiment of many: “It’s such a nice place to work. The people are interesting and fun to be around, and I’ve made lots of new friends here. The clients often let you know you are making a big difference in their lives, and that is very satisfying.”

Many of the older volunteers are also wonderful cooks.  They have lived through hard times and learned how to make do with very little. They often advise clients on how to prepare a certain dish with the items packed into the food bags on a given day.

Volunteers have done everything from painting and electrical work to carpentry and computer fixes. People with full-time jobs make time for a few hours of work at Together We Cope, and sometimes bring in generous checks from their employers who match the volunteer’s hours with dollars.

All that’s needed to join Together We Cope’s volunteer army is a little time, a lot of energy and a big smile.  Remember that you make the difference in our community.
