“With all my extra time, I needed something productive to do.”

Linda SlavickLinda Slavick started volunteering with Together We Cope in August of 2004. Being a widow for 16 years and missing her 20 year old daughter Christine who is attending Illinois State University, Linda found that she had too much time on her hands. “I made an appointment with Together We Cope after I saw a newspaper ad seeking volunteers. With all my extra time, I needed something productive to do.”

Linda is a ball of energy and is a perfect fit for the Nu2U resale shop. Not only is she goal oriented and knows how to get things done, but she does it all with a friendly smile. Linda says she enjoys volunteering at Together We Cope because, “it is nice to help neighbors and people in our community. It is very rewarding to help someone and see the gratitude on their face when you are able to fulfill their needs.” “She is a person that can be counted on whenever she is needed,” reports Pat Hosman the manager at the Sensible Shoppe.

The best example of who Linda is as a person is when Hurricane Katrina hit. As the families and individuals arrived in Tinley Park to escape the devastation caused by Katrina, Linda was instrumental in setting up and organizing the clothing and supplies needed at the State of Hope, where 90 people were housed. Her outgoing and warm attitude was greatly appreciated by the guests who needed someone to smile lovingly and care for them Linda treated everyone with compassion and empathy during their time of need.

When asked why she continues to volunteer her time, she eloquently explained how giving is a two-way street. “Volunteering at Together We Cope gets me through some difficult times because I focus on other peoples problems and not my own.”

Linda is a nine year resident of Tinley Park, but spends the cold months in the warmth of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. We all look forward to the warm weather because with it Linda will return with her bright smile and big laugh.
